Construction work starts on £5.5m events and conference venue

Construction work has now commenced on the new £5.5m purpose-built events and conference venue, The OEC, in Sheffield.

Located between Napoleons Casino and Owlerton Sports Stadium, The OEC will feature a range of multi-purpose suites, catering for up to 500 guests.

WMA Architects has been taking the lead on the project, and construction company Harris CM has started work on the venue, which is due to open this autumn.

The multi-million pound development is being spearheaded by leisure and hospitality operator the A&S Leisure Group.
OEC outside visual (3)
Mark Allen, chief executive at the A&S Leisure Group, said: “We’ve had a vision for this venue for some time now and we’re excited to finally get cracking with the build stage.

“With an excellent reputation for offering great leisure and hospitality at Owlerton Stadium and at our four Yorkshire casinos and restaurants, this multi-million-pound development will only add to that.”

The venue’s Rivelin Suite will be fully adaptable with the capacity to hold up to 500 guests, or can be split up into three separate suites for anywhere between 100 to 250 guests.

The four VIP Hospitality Boxes will offer panoramic views of Owlerton Stadium and can seat up to 20 delegates.

Allen added: “Our time has been spent getting the right team in place to deliver this project, from local Yorkshire suppliers and contractors, to the appointment of Venue Director, Gary Cook.

“Gary’s reputation for delivering outstanding venues and events around the region precedes him. His previous role at Chesterfield Football Club saw him launch the new £15m stadium and we’re confident he will help drive our vision forward making The OEC one of Yorkshire’s finest events and conference venues.”

A Guide to Buying your own Racing Greyhound

Thinking of buying your own greyhound? Here are a few pointers to purchasing and looking after your hound, from first race to retirement.

How much does a racing greyhound cost?

It is possible to purchase a greyhound from as little as £300. If the parents have any track form, or the youngster is already racing, the price will increase accordingly, often up to £1,500/£2,000. Dogs already proving their worth with regular results can fetch £5,000, while big race winners can sell for £25,000+.

Buying your greyhound

Contacting one of your local track trainers can pay big dividends. They usually have young dogs they are bringing on available, and can often provide background information on other saplings you may be interested in. Most trainers have contacts with breeders in Ireland from whom they purchase the majority of their greyhounds, and can usually therefore find a dog to suit your budget

Greyhound auctions and sales trials are regularly held in the UK and Ireland, and are popular on both sides of the Irish Sea. Interestingly, greyhound sales (like horse sales) take place in guineas.  For those of you not old enough to know what a guinea is, it is a unit of currency equal to £1.05. Owlerton usually hold a couple of greyhound sales each year. These can be the ideal place to meet trainers and other owners If you want to keep your initial outlay and outgoings as low as possible, consider forming or joining a greyhound syndicate to buy your dog. Finally, on completion of the purchase, make sure you have all the relevant paperwork including a veterinary certificate, a transfer of ownership and the dog’s stud book all in your name.

Many people find that owning a greyhound under a syndicate is a huge benefit, not only do you share the funding of the greyhound with others, like kennel costs and veterinary bills, but you also get to share the excitement of race days and potentially winning with a group of friends.

A Guide to Buying your own Racing Greyhound

What will your trainer feed your racing greyhound?

Talk to ten successful trainers and you’ll get ten different diets for your hound. Wherever you buy your dog, ask the seller for a dietary sheet and stick with that, at least in the early stages, while the dog settles into its new environment. Any dietary changes should be made over time if the dog is not to suffer digestive problems, as such it is important to communicate often with your trainer.

For racing greyhounds, the diet varies with training, racing levels, and weight. While some trainers feed twice a day, morning and evening, others just feed in the evening. For example, for a 30 kg dog fed twice a day the diet could be something like this:

  • Breakfast: 150g of dried food containing 12% milk and protein.
  • Evening: 600g of lean meat containing 10% fat, 450g of kibble containing 20% protein and 10%-12% fat, and 18ml to 25ml of fish oil.

Nowadays, scientifically formulated complete dry foods are available for racing dogs, but many trainers still prefer to feed their own mix of protein, carbs and fats. Especially so, when their style of training and type of diet produces results on the track.

On racedays, the feeding regime is completely different – depending on what time the greyhound is racing, most trainers will only feed the dog with a light breakfast, as a greyhound should not race on a full stomach, and then when the greyhound returns home after racing, it will then be given its normal full meal and a bit of a treat

Greyhound racing training

In the early days, all your young greyhound needs is a good diet for growth, and regular, but not extreme, exercise. Race specific schooling shouldn’t begin until the dog is at least ten months old, although many successful trainers wait until the animal has passed its first birthday. A greyhound can not race until it is at least 15 months, as its bones are not yet strong enough.

Doggy swimming pools and inclined treadmills are often used to help increase muscle and bone strength, as well as regular field walking. Because greyhounds have two speeds, walk and sprint, sprinting needs to be built up gradually. Get a friend or family member to slip the lead, with you about 100 yards away, then slowly increase the distance to 200 – 250 yards. By now the time is fast approaching when you need a dedicated training track. Most stadiums offer a range of training options and for around £50/wk. a professional experienced trainer can train and bring your dog to race fitness.

A Guide to owning a Racing Greyhound

Is greyhound racing safe?

Often called ‘the working man’s answer to horse racing’, greyhound racing has had its fair share of bad publicity over the years. And, just like horse racing, much has been done to improve its image with better quality tracks, and improved dogs welfare. A qualified, licensed vet must be present whenever a greyhound is racing at the stadium. This includes trials. Dogs are checked both before, and after a race, and vets are on hand to deal with any mishaps on the track.

This small quote from the,’ Trainer’s Guide to Medication Control in Greyhounds,’ will indicate the importance attached to any racing greyhound’s wellbeing. ‘The veterinary surgeon’s welfare duties to the Greyhound are recognized by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain: It is essential that any racing greyhound requiring veterinary attention receives it promptly. It is against the law to deny a greyhound access to veterinary treatment if needed. Therefore treatment for an illness must take priority over racing or trialling.’ In other words, the welfare and wellbeing of your greyhound takes preference over all else.

At Owlerton Stadium we follow the Greyhound Board of great Britain’s Greyhound Commitment which you can read for a much more in-depth breakdown on how we help keep greyhounds safe. You can also read about our Owlerton Stadium Welfare Fund, a fantastic scheme that means if a dog does happen to pick up a career ending injury and the owners can’t afford to pay for the treatment, Owlerton pay for the treatment and place the dog into our rehoming scheme with the Sheffield Greyhound Trust..

How to house-train an ex-racing greyhound

Life After Racing

Like your average athlete, a greyhound’s racing career is relatively short lived, with most dogs retiring between five and six years of age. When buying a racing greyhound, you need to make sure you have plans for the dog once it has retired. You can keep the greyhound yourself or re-home with a family friend. It is not uncommon for the trainers to keep them as pets or you can place them with the Greyhound Trust for re-homing. To help ensure a long and happy life for all the retired dogs, many UK stadia are involved with charitable organisations dedicated to homing as many ex-racing greyhounds as possible.

Having lived a racing kennel lifestyle, your newly retired greyhound will very quickly adapt to living in a home as a normal family pet, but it will need a little domestic training as he/she settles in, and will likely have a few toilet accidents. The move to a new home will be stressful enough, becoming a part of the family 24/7 will be totally alien. A little TLC rather than scolding, will produce the desired results a lot quicker.

Although greyhounds are friendly and placid by nature, always err on the side of caution. If you have other dogs or pets at home, make sure to put your greyhound’s muzzle on, to avoid the risk of potential problems.

Greyhounds will instinctively chase small animals like cats, rabbits, guinea pigs etc, so they should spend time getting to know these other animals. Even when walking your greyhound outside, you should keep the muzzle on and keep them on the lead until they are well trained. Within a short time your pets should begin to accept each other, and your retired racer will become a fully paid up member of the family.

Owlerton Greyhound Stadium wins ‘family friendly’ award

Owlerton Greyhound Stadium proved its family friendly credentials yet again after picking up a major prize at the 2018 Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards, held at Baldwins Omega on Monday 4 June.
This Sheffield venue won the Best Family Friendly award, presented for the venue’s versatile menu options and the welcome it offers to guests from all generations.
Race nights at the stadium take place every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evening, during the day on Mondays and Thursdays and selected Sundays and bank holidays.
And Owlerton managing director John Gilburn said there is always something for all the family: “We were very surprised to win as we didn’t know we’d been nominated in the category, however it’s a fitting award as we do try to have something for all the family to enjoy.
“Our catering is spot on and the staff are great – it’s the atmosphere we create. You can be in the restaurant and the dogs are running and everyone has got their knives and forks in the air and they’re shouting at the dogs to win.
“Everybody loves coming to the dogs from grandparents to grandchildren. Children just love the dogs and they are really good pets. They want to go and feed them and stroke them and cheer them on.”
Owlerton has recently submitted plans for a £5m banqueting suite, which will become one of the largest entertaining and conference spaces in the city and create up to 200 jobs.
The significant investment by stadium owners A & S Leisure Group Ltd. is part of a company restructuring, which will also see a new casino being built in Manchester at the China Town end of Portland Street.
Work is set to start on the 500-capacity banqueting suite in early June and it is expected to open by Easter 2019. Sheffield-based WMA Architects have been commissioned for the project.
Currently the stadium operates four trackside bars – including the popular Paddock Bar which leads directly on to the trackside terracing to experience the real buzz of greyhound racing and the Panorama Bar, which has one of the best views of the finish line.
The Panorama Bar is next to the critically-acclaimed, 300-cover, glass-fronted Panorama Restaurant where diners enjoy a seasonal menu prepared by highly experienced chefs in Sheffield’s largest restaurant.

Getting Ready For Ladies Evening!

Besides the usual thrills of watching the racing, our Ladies Evening on the 29th June is going to be a fun packed evening filled with exciting raffles to be won and auctions to bid on. Maybe most importantly, as this is our Ladies Evening, after all, we’ll be holding a best-dressed competition with some amazing prizes. What other excuse could you possibly need to dress up in your best clothes and look glamorous?

owlertonladies

We love to support local businesses here at Owlerton and all of those suggested below work within the heart of Sheffield and are nearby to us here at the Stadium.

First and foremost you’ll be wanting to choose that one glamorous outfit which will bag you that ‘best dressed’ win. We would highly recommend a visit to Georgie’s Dress Agency. There you will find some beautiful dresses which will make you stand out from the crowd. With friendly and helpful staff in store, they’ll be able to help you find your dream dress or outfit.

Another local clothes shop we can recommend visiting is New Image. Established in 1986, they have been providing Sheffield with elegant gowns from leading fashion designers for years on end. So, if you’re looking for something special to catch the eye of those around you, this could be the place. Take a look!

The next thing to consider is going to be your hair. How are you going to complement your outfit? Will you opt for a more sophisticated updo, long locks of curls, or even a straightened look? Complementing your outfit choice is essential, however, and we know a few places that will be able to help you do just that! Take a look at Flawless Hairdressing Studios or Funky Divas Salon. Both of these local businesses are filled with creative minds and experienced hands who’ll be able to create your next stunning look. Book an appointment to speak to a stylist at either of these super salons.owlerton2

Now, if you’re going to be in with a chance of winning some of the fantastic prizes on offer you’re going to want to have the full works… right! Time to think about makeup! Even if you’re one of those lucky ladies who can put your makeup on perfectly first time and have plenty available to you, there’s nothing that’ll help to make you feel quite as beautiful as a full makeover will! Why not get in touch with Makeup by Pacha. She’ll make you both look and feel beautiful this Ladies Evening and ensure your look lasts all night long.

Besides simply having a makeover, why not book in to have your eyebrows done too? We’d highly recommend using The Secret Brow Society, who offer both microblading and shading, alongside HD Brows, simpler brow shaping and absolutely any other eyebrow needs you may have!19667492_1718595071503097_5470408475307975846_o

OWLERTON GREYHOUND STADIUM & SHEFFIELD FC

Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, today, happily handed over a long lost picture to the world’s first football club – Sheffield FC. The picture was taken in 1909 from the pre-season tour of the Channel Islands and was recently discovered at the Greyhound Stadium.

Dave Perry, General Manager at the Stadium, explained ‘We are not quite sure how it came to be in our possession, it could well have been left here since the old playing days of the 1890s, when Sheffield FC used to play their home games here at Owlerton, but once we discovered it I got in touch with Richard and was more than happy to see it returned to them. History like this is invaluable but when you have the world’s first football club on your doorstep, it’s even more important that the heritage and memories are retained’.

Richard commented;

‘We were delighted when Dave contacted the Club regarding the picture, not only because we were happy to see it again but also to re connect with Owlerton Stadium who provided the Club with a home and a lifeline in what were dark times. I hope that the picture can inspire a promising new partnership between our two historical institutions.’

PPC Stars Top Night Out At Owlerton

A few weeks ago, we offered a night to remember to some of the members of PPC Stars, our new digital marketing partner. The aim of the night was to show them a little of what life at Owlerton is really like and, by the sounds of their feedback, we sure didn’t fail to deliver! See their post below:

ppcstarsowlerton

Tony, Director of PPC Stars, says “It had been years since I had been to the dogs, so I had forgotten just how much fun it is!”.

Owlerton Stadium was an exciting new venture for the rest of the team here at PPC Stars. To be entirely honest, none of us knew quite what to expect, but we were all blown away by what we discovered when we were there.
The first thing which impressed us was not just the appearance of the building and its interiors, but the incredibly friendly faces and vibrant personalities who were there to greet us and offer their expertise throughout the night. Every single person who served us was so thoughtful and friendly. Absolutely everything was covered, including wonderful characters who came and took our bets from the table (while also offering some racing insight too!) We couldn’t have asked for any more.

Tony is a local lad and after living down south for some time, he was excited to get back to his roots and see how much the dogs had changed: My favourite part was how good the service was and how friendly everyone was. Being sat down, fed and watered all evening was great and even having someone take your bets made it a super experience all round! It’s changed a lot since I last visited, the Panorama Restaurant has been extended and renovated and now seats about 300 people. And apparently there are more changes to come with a new banqueting suite and executive boxes replacing the current ones. When I left I was buzzing as we all had such a good laugh and as the casino was next door it was hard not to go in. All in all a cracking evening!” – Smiling faces all round!

One aspect of the evening which we were all delighted with was the high quality of the food provided in the restaurant. As Emma said, although she didn’t really know what to expect, she expected the food to be stereotypical‘stadium food’ and was by no means expecting a gourmet meal. However, she was blown away with the high quality standards of food and the brilliant, efficient, service that we received. Emma enthused that she ‘didn’t realise how amazing the view would be’ and we all certainly agreed. The restaurant was situated so close to the racetrack that we could see all that was going on and felt like we were still wrapped up in the excitement of the atmosphere, watching our dogs racing and placing our bets from the table. We didn’t have to get up and move or even think of beginning to queue for anything, meaning we could focus entirely on our chosen dogs and the fun we were having. Even our drinks were delivered straight to our tables!

Another aspect of the evening which impressed everybody was the care and welfare of the greyhounds themselves. From the moment we arrived, we saw volunteers just inside the turnstiles with their beautiful adopted greyhounds. They were selling tip sheets for 50p with all the money going to the Sheffield Greyhound Trust. They told us how Owlerton Stadium donate a massive amount of money to the charity and are really involved with the re-homing of the retired dogs.

OGOA

The greyhounds on the track looked just as happy as the retired ones at the turnstiles. The racing greyhounds were all in absolutely tip top condition. Not only did the owners and trainers all appear to care deeply for their beloved animals, but we could see that the wonderful team at Owlerton also felt the same way. Owlerton care for the dogs racing with them all the way through their careers, from beginning to end. They offer a lot of help, information and assistance with the aftercare and rehoming of the dogs once their careers have finished. The fact that they’re cared for all the way through their lives is really pleasing to see.

Another thing worth noting is the Owlerton welfare scheme. In the unfortunate case that a greyhound suffers a serious or career ending injury whilst racing, Owlerton understands that the owners may not be in a financial position to face huge vets fees.  Therefore, if this happens, Owlerton step in and pay for the vets fees in order to ensure that all dogs receive the best veterinary care available, and then pay for the kennelling until the greyhound is able to be taken in to the Sheffield Greyhound Trust scheme, where it will be found a forever home.  There’s so much care for these dogs all the way through, it’s lovely to see.

Well, what an experience! We can safely say that we would definitely go back and each one of us had an absolutely incredible time.

Below are the full quotes from some of the team, summarising their night at the stadium!

Enrique Schmidt: “Before I spent the evening with my new friends at Owlerton I wasn’t sure how I felt about dog racing as a sport, having never experienced being at the dogs before. I had the misconception that the welfare of the dogs was overlooked. How wrong was I?! The care for the dogs we saw and the love the owners had for them was overwhelming. What’s more, the dogs each looked like they were really enjoying themselves, they lived for the run they were doing! I had heard people whispering that a dog race could be ‘fixed’ when I mentioned this is where I was going; however I am happy to report that having spent an evening at Owlerton I can see this is absolutely impossible! One comment was that the greyhounds are fed more food to make them heavier and slow them down. The managing director, John Gilburn explained to me how the greyhounds are weighed before and after a race and the weight of the dog can not vary by more than 1 kilo since their last race, as well as other strict rules making cheating next to impossible.

The entire atmosphere of the place was not only upbeat and exciting, but also welcoming and hugely educational for somebody like myself who knew absolutely nothing when I arrived. One person who really stood out to me was a lovely lady called Annie who told me she had been working at the stadium for 29 years! She was selling bets whilst giving us an overview of each of the dogs and was so helpful and kind. Her 29 years of working there tell me not only a lot about herself and her dedication to the company, but also tells me that it must be a really nice place to work.

I came away with some great memories of the lovely people I met and the beautiful dogs I watched race, as they did what they do best. I really hope to come back and visit Owlerton again soon!”

Emma Breedon: “I loved it at Owlerton! Really I did!

I didn’t necessarily know what to expect if I am honest. However, what I think was not clear was what a great, fun experience the stadium provides. Knowing we would be in the restaurant was great, but I didn’t realise how amazing the view would be. You are really close to the races so you don’t miss any of the atmosphere. The food was delicious. I wasn’t going there expecting a gourmet meal but I was really blown away and impressed by how fantastic the food was! It really was incredible.

What I didn’t expect either was the high level of service. Wonderful characters come up to your table and take your bets so you don’t have to leave the table. No one was ever lumbered with going off to place bets, so you can really enjoy your night out with your friends.

Drinks were excellent, again this comes right to your table (let’s face it, who likes bar line-ups?!?!)

I was surprised I didn’t go home with a lovely Greyhound either! There is a lot of focus on the welfare of greyhounds which I think is really important for those in the industry and often overlooked. One of the things I was most impressed with was the fact that the unfortunate case that a greyhound suffers a serious or career ending injury whilst racing, Owlerton step in and pay for the vets fees in order to ensure that all dogs receive the best veterinary care available, and then pay for the kennelling until the greyhound is able to be taken in to the Sheffield Greyhound Trust scheme, where it will be found a forever home.  There’s so much care for these dogs all the way through, it’s lovely to see and sets a really high standard within their industry.

Overall, although I wasn’t sure what to expect, what I got was really impressive. It was a great night out with friends, fantastic food and drinks and the service was incredible. I cannot wait to return and would highly recommend it to anyone for a #TopNightOut!
