THE HARE IS ON THE MOVE!

Owners see a return to Owlerton

Whilst the gates to Owlerton open wide from the 18th May for our lovely customers, we will see Owners returning much sooner from the 12th April!
It feels like a lifetime since Owners and Customers graced the terraces but there isn’t long now and were certainly chomping at the bit to see some normality.
We can’t thank you all enough for your patience and we would like to extend our gratitude to all the Owners who have stuck it out and remained loyal to their hounds!

We have worked hard with the local authority to see this come to fruition and we are pleased to say that as of 12th April you can once again come and watch your beloved Greyhound do what it was born to do at the track!

There will of course be safety measures in place as there were last time and stringent checks to ensure we’re doing our part in seeing a return to normality coupled with the preservation of safety and wellbeing. It will be essential you call our bookings team at least 24 hours in advance to guarantee your spot trackside, we can’t allow walk-ins just yet we’re afraid. Please note there will be no food or drink outlets open until the 18th of May.

Once again, thank you to our customers, please bear with us a little longer, not long now! Also, a massive thank you to our Owners who have been so supportive and patient this past year, see you in a few weeks!

It’s Official – Get on Your Marks for Owlerton Stadium’s Grand Reopening!

Are you ready to get back to some fantastic family fun at Sheffield’s premier greyhound racing stadium? We can hardly wait to tell you the news – Owlerton Stadium will be back open for business again as of the 17th of May.

We’re thrilled to have a provisional re-opening date in place. It’s been a long, hard ride for all of us. We’ve missed you all terribly, and we know that you’re all looking forward to spending a few evenings with us cheering on your favourite dogs.

So – now really is the time for you to start booking that fantastic evening out you’ve been looking forward to with your friends and family. This is it – we are nearly at the finishing line – and it’s safe to say we could all use a bit of decompression!

Bookings Now Open

Owlerton has taken the decision to re-open in May very seriously. We want to make sure that it is safe for us to welcome our loyal guests back into the stands, and that has meant keeping a close eye on the lockdown roadmap set out by the Prime Minister.

We’re now open for you to book parties, get-togethers, and evenings out at Owlerton Stadium from the 18th of May onwards. This means you have around two months to start planning that ultimate end of lockdown celebration with us.

Of course, we understand that there may be changes to the roadmap along the way. We, like everyone else, have our fingers tightly crossed that conditions will be safe once again for us to open up and share our fantastic facilities with you all. Should anything change in the meantime – and should the government make any announcements to the contrary – we will update you as soon as we can.

What You Can Look Forward To

Heading back to Owlerton this May means heading back to all of our much-loved deals, packages, facilities, races and more. It’s going to feel like going to the dogs for the first time all over again! The weather’s getting brighter, and dog racing evenings in the cool summer air are just around the corner.

Of course, we’re preparing our Panorama Restaurant for the big re-opening. This means you’ll be able to experience the wonderful atmosphere, track views and waiting service you’ll remember from all those months ago. Of course, we’ll also make sure the restaurant opens up within safety guidelines set by the government, too! You’ll be able to grab a tote bet and enjoy a delicious basket meal while keeping your fingers crossed for those runners coming in.

We’re also bringing in brand new seasonal menus, too. Things have changed a lot since this time last year, and of course, so have our cuisine selections – but not too much! You can still enjoy the old favourites on our long-standing dinner and snack menus, but you’ll also be able to sample some new seasonal staples to really mix up the old palate. You can take a look at all the menus we’ll be bringing your way online.

Of course, greyhound racing action is coming back, and during lockdown we have kept our close links with the local Greyhound Trust. Therefore, you can be sure our runners will be healthy, happy, and raring to go by the time mid-May rolls around.

Do also look forward to checking out our fabulous selection of drinks and facilities. We offer three separate bars here at Owlerton, each with their own atmosphere and style. It’s like having a night out without having to leave the building!

And yes – the 6 Pack Plus offer, giving you a drink, a basket meal, racing access and bets – will be coming back, too. This amazingly popular racing package is one of the biggest hits with customers here at Owlerton. It’s incredible value, and frankly, we’d be mad to not bring it back with the rest of the racing fun!

Something to Look Forward To

It’s been a long and difficult year. There have been stops and starts, and we’ve been working hard to make sure we can re-open our doors safely, so that racing fun can return to Sheffield in a big way. We now have something even bigger to look forward to – with the lockdown roadmap easing up in the months to come, Owlerton is throwing open its doors and bringing back all the racing fun you’ll remember from early 2020!

Start booking with us online now – take a look at our online form, email us at enquiries@owlertonstadium.co.uk, or call us directly on 0114 234 3074. We’re still working behind the scenes, and we can’t wait to see you all again – it’s been a long time coming, and fingers crossed we’ll see you by the track this coming May!

Greyhound Trust Sheffield: An Insight into the Amazing Work They Do

Here at Owlerton Stadium, we are immensely proud of all our greyhounds. After all, without them, we wouldn’t be able to offer such thrilling entertainment! That’s why we are committed to greyhound welfare and why we work closely with the fantastic Greyhound Trust Sheffield.

The local Greyhound Trust Sheffield has a special place in the hearts of locals and dog lovers as well as those who enjoy racing. Owlerton Stadium prides itself on looking after each and every one of the dogs that race on our tracks. Our greyhounds are happy, healthy, and we help them find loving homes when it is time to retire.

Thinking of adopting your own retired greyhound? Here’s a little more information to help you on your way.

sheffield greyhound trustOur Work with Greyhound Trust Sheffield

The Greyhound Trust Sheffield is one of the biggest greyhound rehoming centres in the UK. They have comprehensive facilities which house up to 26 greyhounds, with their aim always being to help any incoming retirees find warm and caring homes to settle into after finishing their racing career. A greyhound retiring from racing should always be able to look forward to home comforts, family fun and plenty of tasty treats!

The Sheffield branch is part of the national Greyhound Trust charity – you might have seen their delightful ‘Tongue Out Tuesday’ posts on Twitter and Facebook – and we regularly work with them to help local people find wonderful pets they can take home to care for. Dave Perry, Director at Owlerton Stadium, is also Chairman of the Greyhound Trust Sheffield. Therefore, we always make sure to maintain a close link with the wonderful work the charity does.

Why Do Greyhounds Make Great Family Pets?

Greyhounds aren’t just amazing to watch racing at the track. They are some of the most loveable, most gentle pets you will ever come across. In fact, they often become therapy dogs and are great companions for people who find themselves feeling lonely.

More so, they are wonderful family pets. Boundlessly energetic, greyhounds can continue to bounce around long into retirement! Of course, as with any breeds of dog or pet, they have individual personalities – however, a retired greyhound is always likely to be extremely cuddly and gentle. They just want to feel safe and enjoy a treat every now and again!

While greyhounds are fantastic runners, they don’t actually need as much exercise as you might imagine. That said, they of course love a regular walk routine like any dog, meaning a good stretch of the legs is always greeted with plenty of tail wagging! Greyhounds are, above all, homebodies – they love nothing more than to snuggle up.

We know retired greyhounds make amazing pets for family homes. However, do always make sure to meet and learn more about your prospective pet close up with the Greyhound Trust before you decide to rehome one of your own. It’s important that both you and your new four-legged friend are an ideal fit for one another!

More About the Greyhound Trust

The Greyhound Trust Sheffield, as a local charity, is dependent on its amazing volunteers. However, following recent coronavirus restrictions, the kennels have had to temporarily reduce the number of volunteers that can work in the Trust each day. With the Prime Minister’s roadmap for the end of lockdown, we’re all hopeful life at the Trust can return to normal very soon.

The volunteers at the Trust are local people of varying ages from all walks of life! They help to groom the retired pets, raise awareness of the dogs they have awaiting adoption, fundraising and offer general care for all the greyhounds that retire from racing.

The Trust is eager to get back to good old fundraising as soon as it is safe to do so again. We can’t wait to support new events, charity drives and more – and as soon as it’s safe for us to open with volunteers offering a greyhound meet and greet, you can be sure of a warm welcome! The Trust always need support – see their website for details of how you can help.

Finding Your Perfect Pooch

We are immensely proud to work with the wonderful team at the Greyhound Trust Sheffield. They have worked tirelessly since 2006 to make sure our dogs find loving homes, and in the interim, receive plenty of care and love from the moment they leave the track.

The charity has already helped to rehome more than 1,700 retired greyhounds! Could you have the perfect home that a retired greyhound is looking for after finishing a thrilling racing career?

Owlerton Stadium Long-Service Awards and Not a Carriage Clock in Sight!

Team Owlerton are delighted to celebrate with some of the Stadium’s most recognisable faces, albeit at a distance! We are privileged to work in a team brimming with long-service stars – a wealth of knowledge and experience which keeps the Stadium running smoothly every day.

This year we honour the dedication and tireless hard work of no less than four of Team Owlerton’s employees, who join the long-service ranks. Many of our loyal customers will know the faces of our team well; we are proud to have some of the most dedicated employees and customers imaginable.

Team Owlerton Long-Service Stars

Presenting this year’s long-service award gifts is Matt Hamilton, General Manager at the Stadium. Gone are the days of the obligatory Carriage Clock presentation; our employees get to choose their own gift for the mantel piece!

While we don’t want to make anyone blush, we would like to share a little bit of history on this year’s long-service stars:

10 Years of Service

Janet Wattam (pictured front left)

Janet has worked on Tote betting for 10 years and, as the face of Tote at Owlerton, has become an important member of this team. As Owlerton Stadium regulars will know, Janet is always pleasant and polite, with a warm and friendly smile for all her customers and colleagues.

10 Years of Service

Vanessa Glasby (pictured front right)

Vanessa has been with Team Owlerton for 10 years. During this time, Vanessa has worked in all the bars at the Stadium and helps with cleaning, to help deliver that wow factor for our customers. Vanessa is one of the most reliable members of staff anyone would wish for – always happy to work any shift, at short notice. We cannot think of a single day when Vanessa has not been able to come into work! Vanessa’s dedication is mirrored in her partner, who also completed 10 years with Owlerton Stadium last year.

20 Years of Service

Dan Holland (pictured back right)

Dan started his career at Owlerton Stadium as a glass collector and has since worked his way through the ranks. In 2018 Dan became Bar Manager – proof of his unwavering dedication and hard work. Bar Manager role in any busines involves a long working day, but Dan always manages to balance his family commitments and work responsibilities perfectly, with absolute dedication to his role.

20 Years of Service

Nick Midddleton (hiding under the table!)

Nick is a long-service star who has worked his way up from Pot Washer to Catering Manager – testament to what hard work and dedication can achieve. Nick’s dedication to his work is such, that many of us in Team Owlerton were convinced he lived at the Stadium! Nick has provided fantastic support to his staff and wholehearted commitment to his role.

Hard Work and Dedication

“All four fully deserve the recognition for their hard work and dedication to Owlerton Stadium over the years and are a pleasure to know and work with,” Richard Allsop, Assistant General Manager.

We get to see the results of our team’s passion and love of Owlerton Stadium, every day, and are always grateful to work with dedicated colleagues. We would love to have celebrated these awards in true Owlerton style but that will just have to wait until we can all safely have a good knees up together!

We would like to wish Janet, Vanessa, Dan and Nick, congratulations and our unending thanks for your devotion to Owlerton Stadium.

Here’s to another 10 years!

We’ll be back open and running in no time!

One thing is for certain, it has been an unusual year, to say the least – totally unprecedented! A positive lesson we have learned from events during 2020 is just how resilient we all are, especially when we work together as a team. Nowhere has that been clearer, than at the Stadium. Team Owlerton have worked so hard to adapt to required COVID-19 changes – to keep everyone safe and keep the venue in a constant state of readiness for when we can open the doors to everyone again.

As Christmas approaches, our favourite time of year at the Stadium, we have been looking forward to welcoming families, friends and businesses from across the region, to celebrate Christmas with us. However, considering that any decision from the Government will not be made until 16th December, and restrictions of the Tier system, we do not feel we would be able to celebrate in the true, Owlerton Stadium festive spirit. So, it is with deep regret, we have decided to cancel our planned events to the public for December 2020.

We assure everyone who has made a booking with us for December 2020, our bookings team will be in contact with everyone to arrange refunds.

Christmas may be cancelled at Owlerton Stadium, but we will be with you in the festive spirit! We are pleased to confirm racing will continue behind closed doors throughout December and Team Owlerton will continue working behind the scenes, keeping everyone updated with news and festive fun via our social pages.

We’re planning for a great 2021, and we know you are too! Not only will the stadium have Greyhound racing, Speedway and Stock Car racing back on and open to the public, as soon as we can, we would encourage everyone to consider venue hire at the Stadium. From fundraising and birthdays to stag and hen parties, the Stadium has a fantastic value offer for everyone to take advantage of.

Let’s not forget Owlerton Stadium bars, the Paddock Bar, Napoleons Bar, and the jewel in our crown, Panorama bar, with our great offers and views of the track – perfect for your next, much awaited get-together with friends or colleagues.

Finally, our team of chefs cannot wait to get back in the kitchen at Panorama Restaurant! Our delicious seasonal menu will be ready and waiting for 2021, with our first-class service!

We’ll be back open before you know it!

Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and happy New Year celebrations.

All the best,

Your, Team Owlerton

It’s always Safety First at Owlerton Stadium

It has been seven months since fans were watching football at Hillsborough. Footage of supporters sitting in stands for Sheffield Wednesday’s FA Cup clash against Manchester City seems other-worldly in these Covid times.

Yet just over the A61 dual carriageway, fans are paying to get through turnstiles to watch elite sport. They are the old-fashioned, cast-iron turnstiles too, with that click as you pass through on that last stage before the live action begins.

At the Owlerton Stadium, greyhounds have been back racing since June and continued when the Government abandoned pilot events in other sports while warning not to expect fans back until March, for fear of coronavirus spread.

The Sheffield institution has remained open as they operate as a licenced premises. Punters watch from the 300-capacity Panorama Restaurant overlooking the track and have their food, drink – and gambling – delivered to their table as they watch 14 races.

It may not be perfect, but it works, albeit with strict safety rules as sport is hosted during a pandemic. More than 100,000 people have signed a petition urging the Government to reconsider allowing football fans back inside stadiums. The example of Owlerton shows it can be done.

“Sport, in general, is a major part of people’s lives and the sooner we can all get back to watching a live event the better for all concerned,” said Matthew Hamilton, General Manager at Owlerton Stadium. “Sport can become one of the safest places to visit although a lot of hard work and costs will need to be applied to achieve this and given the loss of all revenue for most stadia it’s a case of survival of the fittest.”

As fans filtered out of the stadium at the end of the meeting, 2m apart, there is that almost forgotten feeling of discussing sport with fellow fans. Safety is the important part of everyone getting to their seats but for 14 races spectators can totally escape the world outside.

After going through the turnstiles, hand sanitiser is used immediately, masks are worn and there is no wandering around the arena. Drinks and food are taken off trays by punters and hands are sanitised again after a bet is placed with a cashier who goes from table to table wearing personal protective equipment.

“And the hare… is on the move,” announces the commentator. Then, for 500m of racing there is the atmosphere that comes with a cheering on a winning greyhound. The cashier comes back round paying out winnings or taking more bets.

Given that screens are around the restaurant showing other sports, Owlerton is the blueprint to follow. They could be hosting any event.

Punters remain in their bubbles, just as they could for football games. Premier League clubs have hospitality suites which could assume a similar set-up to get spectators in and out safely to watch elite sport for the first time since lockdown in March.

“We are seeing a slow return to the restaurant,” added Hamilton. “I think given the current restrictions on table service and such that it lends itself nicely to our restaurant service but has significantly impacted upon the more casual spectator who would not normally have needed to book into the stadium to visit.”

EFL clubs have discussed whether fans could be sat in groups around the stadium and this is the evidence that it can be done safely.

On Tuesday evening at Owlerton there were 146 people booked into the restaurant. Owners and trainers had a section of the terrace, but they otherwise remained empty. There would usually be punters betting with on-track bookies and cheering on their dogs. At the moment the betting is through the Tote.

It may not be like the classic nights where the stands are packed but in the context of sport fans being starved of live action, it is like being reunited with a long-lost friend.

“We went through great lengths to even come close to opening, we then had to go further!” said Hamilton. “We spent months observing other businesses and sectors, reading their guidance and scrutinising our own experiences and knowledge.

“Like every other business, we still have 54 per cent of our staff on furlough and with the impending cessation of the furlough scheme and possible further local/government restrictions, this is sure to have an impact on the business even more.”

The Other Rex, trained by Barrie Draper, won the big one on Tuesday evening, an A2 class race. Draper is hoping for crowds to be let back in fully to get the atmosphere back on the terraces. As it stands, there is no presentation for the winner unless there is a big sponsor.

“It is a different atmosphere at the stadium without the thousands of people there and the bars and restaurants full,” said Draper. “There was a buzz like with football and having a 12th man in the stands.

“It’s been difficult. The owners have been loyal and paid for things with no sport. Our sport is entertainment and hen-and-stag parties are all part of that. It is good for the dogs as they want to be racing and it keeps the sport alive.

“We’re all hoping that we could be back so everyone can be here, and we get those buzz-nights back. Until you have them back fully, you almost don’t know what you’ve missed. You hope what they can do, they do.”

When is Owlerton Stadium Re-Opening, and What Can You Expect?

For millions of people, and thousands of local businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic has provided many different challenges. However, Owlerton Stadium is pleased to announce that we will be safely re-opening our doors to the public, following a thorough assessment of our health and safety measures – meaning that you’ll soon be able to come and enjoy the best in Sheffield dog racing fun as always.

Owlerton Stadium will be re-opening, following guidance and advice from the government, on Saturday 5th September. In the meantime, before you book any parties or events with us, and before you come and have a flutter or two on our brilliant racing schedule, we recommend you take a look at some of the changes we’re bringing in to make sure that you and our team are safe.

These new measures are in place to restrict the chances of spreading the COVID-19 virus. It is everyone’s hope that, in time, full normality will resume. For now, however, we must readjust to ensure that you can continue to have fun with us – in a safe and responsible manner.

What Will Change for You?

Pre bookings are required for all visitors which includes owners and can be made either online or via our telephone booking lines which are open Monday to Friday between 9am – 5pm. Due to current restrictions in place, our 6 Pack, Super 6, Fab Free Tuesday and Free Pie Tuesday promotions have been temporarily suspended however we look to reinstate these offers at the earliest opportunity.

Owlerton Stadium will be bringing in new social distancing measures to protect our staff and customers. Don’t worry – as there will be clear markings, signs, and guidance in place. This also means that we will have additional Perspex screens and sanitiser stations, too, so that you can keep yourself clean and safe throughout your visit.

You’ll also be encouraged to use contactless payments wherever possible. We’ll still be taking cash and card payments, but contactless is proven to be the safest way of exchanging money during the pandemic climate. You’ll be able to pay up to £45 per transaction with us in this manner.

You’ll also find that we are making big changes to our dining experience. The layout of our fabulous restaurant is changing to help safely position you with regard to our staff and other customers. What’s more, our menus will be disposable, and while you can rely on at seat service, we will continue to serve you in a manner that is safe in line with government advice.

What Are We Doing to Protect You?

Not only are we bringing in the above measures to offer you additional safety and protection, we are changing the way we operate, too. This means that our team will be working to careful, pre-planned shifts, where interaction is more limited than before. This does not mean you won’t still receive the same great service! However, what it will mean is that the Owlerton team will interact with each other in more conscientious ways.

Rest assured; we’ve taken up thorough retraining during lockdown. This means that all our team at Owlerton understands what is expected of them by the time we re-open. It’s just as important to keep you safe as it is to keep our team safe, too.

Please also be aware that we will be wearing PPE, or personal protection equipment, should need arise. This means that we may where masks, guards or gloves depending on the situation at hand. Please understand that these measures are in place to help keep Owlerton Stadium safe for all to enjoy during this difficult time.

Other Things to Keep in Mind

Before you visit Owlerton Stadium, there are a couple of other points you should keep in mind. Please be aware that, in line with social distancing measures, we will be changing the number of customers we welcome into our venue at any one time. Please note that this may mean we may restrict volumes at busy periods. Please understand that, again, this is to help keep everyone safe – and we ask for your understanding while we all continue to adapt to these pandemic measures.

We will also be making sure that our premises are carefully cleaned and monitored more so than ever before. Owlerton Stadium has always been a clean, safe place for everyone to relax and unwind in. However, we will be renewing our focus on high traffic regions and will also ensure that any highly-touched areas are cleaned as priority.

We do ask you to consider how you are feeling before you head to our venue. Not only is it not going to be much fun for you to try and enjoy a night out when you’re feeling poorly, you must isolate yourself at home is you are showing any signs of COVID-19. Even if you have mild symptoms associated with the virus, please do not visit Owlerton Stadium. The NHS advises that you need to self-isolate for at least a week if you have symptoms, or test positive, and for up to two weeks if you have been in contact with anyone who has the virus. Full advice is available online from the NHS.

Looking to the Future

We understand that these are challenging times for everyone right now. The pandemic has changed normality in many different ways. However, to keep everyone safe, healthy, and happy, Owlerton Stadium is taking measured, careful steps to ensure that you can continue to enjoy our hospitality and racing experiences without fear of infection.

To help keep Owlerton Stadium safe during this period, please be sure to follow our social distancing guidelines, to sanitise your hands on arrival and throughout your stay, and to make sure to stay home if you are showing any signs or symptoms relating to COVID-19.

We all hope that these new measures will only be temporary for a little while longer. However, until we can all get greater control over the virus, we must continue to make things safe for our team and our customers.

Owlerton Stadium is re-opening – and we can’t wait to bring our fantastic racing action back to the people of Sheffield. Take a look at our deals and packages and do remember to stay safe and alert.
