A greyhound who had a successful racing career but is now happily retired in a loving home has made an unexpected best friend – a cat! Kizzy, a nine year old former racing greyhound who competed under the name Roman Princess, lives in Stocksbridge with her owner Zena Evans, seven other dogs and three cats including her special friend Minnie, who is 18 months old.
Zena, who works at the Sheffield Retired Greyhound Trust’s Gosling Moor Farm at Wortley, said: “I have always had cats so when I started to think about getting dogs as well it was important that I knew they would get on with my feline friends! “Roy and Lynda Cattlin who run the RGT farm are experts at matching new owners with dogs and they did exactly that for me with each of my greyhounds as it was so important they got on with my cats.
“However, the relationship between Kizzy and Minnie really is something special. Minnie is a feral kitten who was the runt of a litter of farm kittens who found her way into my home and never left! She rules all the dogs but has forged a really lovely relationship with Kizzy. It is a really unexpected friendship but absolutely lovely to see. “Obviously it was vital the dogs I brought into my home didn’t mind that there were cats about as well but I did not expect them to become bosom buddies like they are.”
Since its formation in 2006, the Sheffield Retired Greyhound Trust, which is heavily subsidised by Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, has found new homes for more than 1,000 retired greyhounds. Roy Cattlin said: “It’s fantastic to hear about stories like the Kizzy and Minnie friendship. More and more people are seeing what lovely, affectionate dogs greyhounds are. They are an incredibly docile breed so make great family pets and, because they don’t need – or generally want – much exercise, they can be a great choice for older people looking for a companion.
“We would encourage people thinking about getting a dog to come to the farm and meet all the lovely dogs that are looking for their new family to enjoy their retirement with.”
